medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. September) is the feast day of:
The Nativity of the Virgin Mary
Eusebius, Nestabus, Zeno, and Nestor (d. 362) These three kinsmen
desecrated a temple in Gaza (Palestine) in the reign of Julian the
Apostate. They were imprisoned, but an outraged mob broke into the prison,
dragged them out, stoned them, drove spindles into them, poured boiling
water over them, knocked their brains out, etc., and finally threw them in
the pit outside of town where dead animals were disposed of.
Kinemark (Cynfarch Oer) (5th cent.) According to the Book of Llan Dav,
Kinemark was a Scottish chief and a disciple of the Welsh St. Dyfrig.
Disibod (7th cent.) Disibod was an Irish bishop who went to Germany.
There he founded the monastery later known as Disibodenberg (Diessenberg),
near Bingen. Hildegard of Bingen wrote a vita of Disibod in 1170,
supplementing local tradition about the saint with a vision or two.
Corbinian of Freising (d. 730) Corbinian was born near Melun (France). He
became a recluse there for 14 years, but found that he had too many
visitors, attracted to C. for his spiritual advice. So he decided to go to
Rome and become a recluse there. But Pope Gregory II talked C into
becoming a missionary in Bavaria, instead. Corbinian worked very
successfully under the patronage of Duke Grimoald, but ran into trouble
when the duke married his brother's widow and C. then refused to have
anything to do with him. The new duchess (Biltrudis) quite successfully
turned the duke against C., and attempted to have him murdered. He ended
up fleeing, but returned soon after, when Grimoald had been killed in
battle.
Alan de la Roche (d. c. 1475-9) Not officially canonized. Alan is
credited with inventing, or maybe popularizing, or maybe revising the
Rosary. He was a Dominican friar, a famed preacher through much of Europe.
He seems to have created the story that the BVM presented the first rosary
to St. Dominic.
