medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. September) is the feast day of:
Deborah (d. c. 1200-1000 BCE) Deborah was a Hebrew prophetess who appears
in the book of Judges.
Jonah (d. 8th cent. BCE) Jonah was an Israelite prophet of the 8th
century. His story, in the book of Hebew scriptures named after him, is
that God sent him to the king on Nineveh with a "repent or else" message.
But Jonah was afraid and tried to escape his prophetic duty, only to be
swallowed by an enormous fish (who regurgitated the unpalatable prophet
after three days). Jonah then went and did what he had been ordered to do;
the people of Nineveh repented and were saved.
Matthew (1st century) Matthew (called Levi in the gospels of Mark and
Luke) was a tax collector who became one of Jesus' disciples. From very
early times he has been regarded as the author of the gospel that bears his
name. Matthew's life after the resurrection is obscure. The Roman
Martyrology says he was martyred in Ethiopia, the Martyrology of Jerome
says it was in Persia. His purported relics made it from Ethiopia to
Finistere (Brittany) and then to Salerno (compliments of Robert Guiscard).
Castor of Apt (d. before 426) Castor became the first known bishop of Apt
(southern France) in 419, and enjoyed a strong cult for centuries.
Maura of Troyes (d. c. 850) Maura was a native of Troyes (France), where
she lived a life of prayer and penitence. She was especially famous for
the liturgical garments she made. Maura was credited with the gift of
miracles and experienced many unusual visions.
