medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I recall posting a question regarding the milieu of Shakespeare with regard
to Catholic and Protestant beliefs and traditions. I was then exploring how
the reception of Shakespeare's religious characters and ideas found in his
work might be influenced by issues such as we are describing here. It struck
me that perhaps the all-too-common black-and-white of Catholic v. Protestant
in the Elizabethan period (and after)may have lead to a false understanding
of his work.
(The thread is in the archives somehwere)
Not that I have any specific conclusions to draw, but I thought I'd remind
myself that these issues go deeper than purely ecclesiastical ideology, and
relate quite deeply to our understanding of diverse artforms and writings of
the period.
