medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Clint,
Jesuit theatre of the 17th and 18th cents. is written largely in Latin;
most of its texts come from countries whose principal scholarly language is
not English. So this may turn out to be a frustrating (though in that
regard not uneducational) avenue of inquiry for your student. That said,
there is basic bibliography in Nigel Griffin's _Jesuit school drama: a
checklist of critical literature_ (London: Grant and Cutler, 1976; 1st
suppl, 1986). More recent bibliography will be in footnotes to articles in
Maria Chiabo and Federico Doglio, eds., _I gesuiti e i primordi del teatro
barocco in Europa: convegno di studi, Roma 26-29 ottobre 1994, Anagni 30
ottobre 1994_ (Roma: Centro studi sul teatro medioevale e
rinascimentale,1995) and in Judith Rock, _Terpsichore at Louis-le-Grand:
baroque dance on a Jesuit stage in Paris_ (Saint Louis: Institute of
Jesuit Sources, 1996). A well known 17th-cent. author is Jacobus
Masenius: three of his plays have been translated by Michael C. Halbig as
_The Jesuit theater of Jacob Masen : three plays in translation with an
introduction_ (New York: Peter Lang, 1987).
Best,
John Dillon
