medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. September) is the feast day of:
Cornelius (d. 253) Cornelius became bishop of Rome in 251. He had to deal
during his short pontificate with internal dissension rather than
persecution, and found himself especially fighting the hard-liners
(Novatians) who opposed reconciliation with backsliders and other serious
sinners. When persecution started up again in 253, Cornelius was banished
to Civita Vecchia, and died there (probably of the hardships he was
subjected to, although later accounts say he was beheaded).
Crescentius of Perugia (d. c. 300) This 11-year-old saint was a son of St.
Euthymius. After his father was martyred, C. fled. He was captured at
Perugia however, returned to Rome, and was tortured and beheaded for
publicly proclaiming his faith.
Maternus of Cologne (d. c. 325) Maternus was the first known bishop of
Trier. In the Middle Ages he was identified as the son of the widow of
Naim, who was resurrected by Jesus, and also as a disciple of St. Peter.
Elevation of the Holy Cross. This is the celebration of Emperor Heraclius'
successful recovery of theTrue Cross from the Persians in the seventh
century, and its triumphant return to Jerusalem.
Notburga of Tyrol (d. 1313) Notburga was a peasant who became a kitchen
servant in the household of the count of Rattenburg. She gave the leftover
food from the count's table to the poor. The countess, however, ordered
that the leftovers be fed to the pigs instead, and when Notburga disobeyed
she was dismissed. She was, however, rehired when the countess died soon
afterwards, and continued her care of the poor until her death.
