Here are a few good articles on the question of whether
wall paintings served as "Bibles of the illiterate." Plese
note that it has been about a decade since I did any
research on this topic, so there are almost certainly newer
publications to consider.
Camille, Michael. "Seeing and Reading: Some Visual
Implications of Medieval Literacy and Illiteracy." _Art
History_ 8 (1985): 26-49.
Chazelle, Celia M. "Pictures, Books, and the Illiterate:
Pope Gregory's Letters to Serenus of Marseilles." _Word
and Image_ 6 (1990): 138-53.
Duggan, Lawrence G. "Was Art Really the 'Book of the
Illiterate'?" _Word and Image_ 5 (1989): 227-51.
Kessler, Herbert L. "Diction in the 'Bibles of the
Illiterate'." In _World Art: Themes of Unity and
Diversity_, edited by Irving Lavin, 2:297-304. University
Park: Pennsylvania State University Press.
-----. "Pictoral Narrative and Church Mission in
Sixth-Century Gaul." In _Pictoral Narrative in Antiquity
and the Middle Ages_, edited by Herbert L. Kessler and
Marianna Shrever Simpson, 75-91. Hanover, NH: University
Press of New England, 1985.
