ISSUE 54 (Fall 2002)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Issue 54 (Fall 2002), consisting of 76 pages, including numerous profusely
illustrated articles, was published in September 2002 and has been sent to
all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map Society.
CYRUS ALA'I presents a seldom seem overview of Islamic mapping in the 9th
to 14th centuries. HEATHER EGAN WANSER of the Library of Congress
discusses how to spot good and bad maps, from a conservation point of view,
and gives a multitude of helpful information on how maps on paper are best
maintained at home and in museums everyone will learn how to protect their
cartographic prizes. THOMAS SANDER discusses how all map aficionados are
travelers, whether in their armchair or crossing the world and looking at
maps. GENE SCHEEL examines the history of a small town outside the
nation's capitol that is said to have been surveyed by George
Washington. WALT WILSON shares 33 maps of Texas all with different shapes
and discusses milestones that shaped Texas. PEARCE GROVE summarizes map
treasures seen on a Washington Map Society field trip to Tidewater
Virginia. HAL HARDAWAY reflects on a meeting of the Cumming Map Society in
Petersburg and Richmond Virginia. BERT JOHNSON looks forward to the June
2003 International Conference on the History of Cartography, examining the
expected events; he attended the last two ICHC meetings. A friend
remembers ALICE RECHLIN PERKINS. The award value of the 2003 Ristow Prize
has been increased full details are included. Three WMS members share
thoughts about themselves and maps. Three books/CD-ROMs are
