ISSUE 54 (Fall 2002)

Issue 54 (Fall 2002), consisting of 76 pages, including numerous profusely
illustrated articles, was published in September 2002 and has been sent to
all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map Society.
CYRUS ALA'I presents a seldom seem overview of Islamic mapping in the 9th
to 14th centuries. HEATHER EGAN WANSER of the Library of Congress
discusses how to spot good and bad maps, from a conservation point of view,
and gives a multitude of helpful information on how maps on paper are best
maintained at home and in museums everyone will learn how to protect their
cartographic prizes. THOMAS SANDER discusses how all map aficionados are
travelers, whether in their armchair or crossing the world and looking at
maps. GENE SCHEEL examines the history of a small town outside the
nation's capitol that is said to have been surveyed by George
Washington. WALT WILSON shares 33 maps of Texas all with different shapes
and discusses milestones that shaped Texas. PEARCE GROVE summarizes map
treasures seen on a Washington Map Society field trip to Tidewater
Virginia. HAL HARDAWAY reflects on a meeting of the Cumming Map Society in
Petersburg and Richmond Virginia. BERT JOHNSON looks forward to the June
2003 International Conference on the History of Cartography, examining the
expected events; he attended the last two ICHC meetings. A friend
remembers ALICE RECHLIN PERKINS. The award value of the 2003 Ristow Prize
has been increased full details are included. Three WMS members share
thoughts about themselves and maps. Three books/CD-ROMs are
reviewed. And there is more. "The Portolan" is published three times per
year; issue 55 is expected to be released in January 2003.

AUTHORS OF ARTICLES IN THIS ISSUE
DR. CYRUS ALA'I has since 1984 studied the history of cartography and
collected old maps of Persia. Since 1998, he has been working on a book
entitled "The Mapping of Persia 1477-1925". He has written twelve
articles, most on Islamic mapping.
JOHN W. DOCKTOR is past President of the Washington Map Society. He is the
Society's webmaster and a frequent contributor to "The Portolan."
DR. EVELYN EDSON is Professor of History at Piedmont Virginia Community
College in Charlottesville Virginia. She is the author of "Mapping Time
and Space: How Medieval Mapmakers Viewed Their World."
PEARCE S. GROVE has been a director of four college, university, and
research libraries, and also served the National Endowment for the
Humanities as organizer and Director of the U.S. Newspaper Program. He was
director of 16 libraries at Colonial Williamsburg.
JAMES (HAL) HARDAWAY is a Captain in the U.S. Navy. A native Virginian,
his interests include early Virginia, Colonial America and the World during
the age of exploration.
HUBERT O. (BERT) JOHNSON, past president and past membership chair of the
Washington Map Society, is a frequent contributor to "The Portolan." He is
the Society's outreach chairman and coordinator of its involvement at the
ICHC meeting.
THOMAS F. SANDER is immediate past President of the Washington Map Society
and the Editor of "The Portolan."
EUGENE M. SCHEEL has written nine books about Virginia history and has
researched and drawn (by hand) more than four-dozen detailed historical
maps. He writes an historical column for the "Washington Post" and is a
frequent contributor to "The Portolan."
HEATHER EGAN WANSER is Senior Paper Conservator in the Conservation
Division of the U.S. Library of Congress.
WALTER E. WILSON is a retired Navy Officer. An avid collector of mid-19th
century cartographic reference material and maps of Texas, he is currently
conducting research for a carto-bibliography of maps depicting Texas from
1836 to 1850.
ERIC W. WOLF is past president of the Washington Map Society, current
President of the Society for the History of Discoveries, and owner and
chief of acquisitions of the Fiat Lux Library.
