medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. September) is the feast day of:
Candida the Elder (d. c. 78) Legend reports that Candida was the first to
welcome St. Peter when he passed through Napels on his way to Rome; he then
cured her of an illness and converted her to Christianity. Candida then
converted St. Aspren (who became the first bishop of Naples). Candida and
other Christians were martyred on the Ostian Way.
Hermione of Ephesus (d. c. 117) Acts 21:9 reports that Hermione was a
prophetess and daughter of Philip the Deacon. According to tradition, she
was martyred in Ephesus.
Marcellus of Lyons (d. c. 178) Marcellus was a priest of Lyons. He was
imprisoned as a Christian, but escaped. When recaptured, he was buried up
to his waist and left to die (which he did three days later).
Boniface I (d. 423) Boniface was an elderly Roman priest when he was
elected pope in 418 as a counter-pope (two days before, one faction in Rome
had elected Eulalius after seizing the Lateran). The emperor convened two
councils to deal with the duplicate pope problem, and decided in favor of
Boniface. Boniface appears to have been a moderate, supporting Roman
rights against Constantinople, Church rights against the emperor, and
orthodox dogma against the Pelagians. He supported Augustine in his
polemic against Pelagius, and several of Augustine's works on the subject
are dedicated to Boniface.
Ida of Herzfeld (d. c. 813) Ida was a member of the Carolingian family, a
great-granddaughter of Charles Martel. Charlemagne married her off to a
noble, but she was widowed at a young age. Ida devoted the rest of her
life to religious works, giving most of her revenues to the poor. She
established a convent at Herzfeld, where she had a stone coffin made for
herself, filling it daily with food for the poor.
