medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Since the topic is trafficking in relics, I wondered if someone could help
me with a question. I remember reading somewhere an account of a monk or
friar stealing a part of the body of a particular saint. It might have been
an arm or a finger. I ask this question because I am trying to identify a
scene on a relief which possibly shows the theft of a finger from a saint's
sarcophagus. In this case it is a woman who removes the relic. I would
assume this is not an uncommon motif in vitae. Any help or comments would be
much appreciated.

Yet Europeans have had the gall to make fun of more "primitive" peoples
who
thought that mirrors and cameras might "steal" their souls!
