the real expert on Celestine V is our Pope of the LIst, George. Here's the
first stealing of Celestine V:
In 1326, Celestine was moved to the Church of St. Agatha, inside the
Ferentino city walls to protect it against a siege.
After repeated unsuccessful attempts by the city of L'Aquila to buy the
body, two of Celestine's friars, Fra Yacobo de Rogi and Selmontino stole it,
bringing it to L'Aquila on January 27, 1327. They interred it at the end
of the left aisle in the Church of Sta. Maria de Collemaggio. About
100,000 people of L'Aquila held a festival for twenty days celebrating the
return of Celestine to the city that he loved so much.
In April of 1998, his bones were stolen from the urn in L'Aquila. They
were found a day and a half later in the cemetary of Amatrice, a small
village nearby. I don't believe they ever caught the thieves.
Antipope Benedict XIII (Papa Luna)'s skull was also stolen in 2000 and held
for ransom, but was recovered and returned (although he wasn't a saint).
I think there are more, or at least I know there are more papal body thefts,
though off the top of my head I can't remember if they were saints, but I'll
check it out for you.
