medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
thanks, Sarah.
i came across a reference to these in the Rhine und Maas article but hadn't
had a chance to run them down yet.
that christusrex.org site is something of a Trip --and your first link didn't
work for me-- but a little digging & drilling is rewarded, many times.
here's a better shot of the f. 71v image :

and a bigger one :

ana even BIGGER one :

Diminishing, Game Over, Tilt, Reset)
what is the significance of the different colors of the robes the two clerics
carrying the bier are wearing --black behind and that beautiful blue in front
?
the fancy fabric over the bier, underneath the reliquary itself, seems to be
something of a required feature, in these processions with big reliquaries.
not certain, but something of the sort *might* be what one of my Chartres
badges guys had in mind with his curious cross-hatching :
http://www.ariadne.org/centrechartraine/badges/forgeais/forgeais2_29.jpg
though, perhaps that's just the "woven" base of the bier ("woven" with white
oak strips, like a chair seat, i should expect).
the other image in the T.R.H. (fol. 72r) is of lesser interest, for my
purposes, though the somewhat droll subject matter provides welcome relief :

REEL BIG (no kidding) :
http://www.christusrex.org/www2/berry/DB-f72r-d2l.jpg
http://www.christusrex.org/www2/berry/DB-f72r-d3l.jpg (they cropped off the
banners! duh.)
i read this as being a procession with two reliquaries (?) and two books, with
accompanying thuribleguy & aspurgeserator, banners (what *do* you call those?)
& a couple of urchinae de via for atmosphere.
(pardon my Latin.)
or, are those two objects not reliquaries but monstrances holding the
Sacrament?
in which case the guy who dropped his is no doubt in *Big* trouble, plague or
no plague.
my thanks to all for the other responses on this string --i'm working through
them, as time and Grace allows (and she keeps me pretty busy, what with the
housework and the yardwork and the kids, etc.).
christopher
