medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
we've been having a discussion on mediev-l about clovis' baptism and how he
did not wait, as did constantine, until he was on his deathbed to be baptized.
this, it was suggested, is related to the victory of infant baptism, and
the notion that baptism shd occur immediately, hence waiting until you're
ready to give up things like sex (augustine) or killing (constantine) is
not longer "necessary".
at what point have scholars located the shift to infant
baptism? (obviously Clotilda is practising it with her kids)
is the principle of immediate baptism related?
what are the implications for the relationship of baptism to sins you know
you're going to commit?
are there significant differences btwn east and west?
any good recent bibliography?
