medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To All,
I am using this forum as a means of attracting attention to the wealth of
information in the Danish medieval wall paintings. I am now 89 years old,
and my physical condition prevents me from waiting for any other form of
publication.
Romanesque Halos
There is a considerable variation in the "halo" in the wall paintings of the
medieval Danish churches.
I hope that this series of papers will enable the classification of halos to
be more accurate. I believe that
even this short note on forty-six halos will show the necessity of future,
more rigid, classification.
The images will be listed by the style when they first appear in a wall
painting. This group is cataloged as "Rom #", this indicates that the first
example of the image was dated 1100-1250.
Since the rules of the med-rel list outlaw attachments, the pictures of the
images described briefly below, will be sent at the request of a member to
their private email address. While this sheet is best seen in color, black
and white will provide considerable information.
There are forty-six halos found in the Mills Kronborg Collection dated in
the Romanesque period.
Of these forty-six, eighteen were unclear, and were not included in the
defined halo types.
There are thirteen halos included in the Rom 1 group. This halo in this
group is of raised plaster, scalloped around the edge and covered with gold
leaf. This is the only plaster halo style in the medieval Danish church.
The second group of eleven halos, comprise the simplest form of the "cross
halo" shown here as Rom 3.
Rom 2 and Rom 4 show two shapes of a curved element forming the cross.
Rom 5 might be considered a variant of Rom 4 in that essentially varies from
Rom 4 only in the use of color to create the "cross". This halo was found on
the end of cross carried by Christ. Rom 4 is the halo on the head of Christ
in the same painting.
Sincerely, Jim
