medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Concerning the quotation and its possible source:
James M. Blythe has an article in 'History of Political Thought', vol. 22:2
(Summer 2001), "Women in the Military: Scholastic Arguments and Medieval
Images of Female Warriors," pp. 242-69, and on pp 265-6 he cites this very
phrase, with both quotations from Augustine, as coming from Ptolemy of
Lucca's De Regimine Principum, 4.14.6 (except that in place of "sentina in
mari" he has "dentina in navi" ), and Blythe comments in note 87 on p. 266
that he was unable to find the exact quotation in Augustine's works.
