Earl Legacy
Earl partners will recall that when Earl ceased operations last September
there was an amount of money belonging to Earl that the Earl Board agreed
should be spent in an appropriate way, and which would continue to support
the Aims Objectives and Ethos of Earl.
The small group of people charged with administering this fund (which has
resided in the Laser Foundation Bank) originally pursued the idea of an Earl
Fellowship. This idea was explored in some depth with two Departments of
Library studies and a number of public libraries. However although the idea
was an attractive one it became obvious as it was explored in greater depth
that it needed to be refocused as a research study in order to both build
upon the successes and work of Earl, and to leave a lasting legacy of the
innovative programme and systemic change that Earl had achieved.
The Group therefore returned to the drawing board and is currently
developing a specific Research Study, which will be announced in early 2003,
and will be administered by the BL CPP, who administer the Laser Foundation
Grant Making Process.
This study will explore how the 'e' agenda, developed so successfully by
Earl using the expertise of the Earl staff and consultants and the expertise
of public librarians involved in Earl, can be continued. This agenda
includes the areas of e-content, professional e-signposting and an award
winning national reference library. The proposed study will continue to
build on this work.
Once the proposal and the details for bidding are completed, full
information will be widely circulated.
