School Studentship
The School of Geography and Geosciences has set aside a sum of
money to support a research student working in any area of interest to
the School. The sum includes fees for a United Kingdom or European
Union student (=A32900 per year), plus a stipend of =A38000 per year.
Overseas students are not eligible unless they can find the difference
between UK/EU and overseas fees from some other source. Overseas fees
are currently =A37400 (or =A39850 for lab-based topics) per year, so the
difference would need to be self-financed. The chances of success are
greater if you are
interested in one of the research topics listed below :
3D Facies architecture and petrophysical attributes of a recent fluvial
system (Dr Ruth Robinson)
Controversy across the Great Glen Fault of Scotland: when and where did
the rocks come from? ( Dr G Oliver )
Crustal thickening and collapse geometries in the Caledonides of NW
Ireland (Dr Ian Alsop)
Determination of the quantitative properties of near surface marine
sediments from shallow seismic reflection data (Prof.J McManus/Prof. C D
Green/Dr C R Bates)
Dispersal of accessory minerals in the surficial environment (Dr Ed Stephens=
)
Geometry of accommodating structures within ductile thrust sheets (Dr Ian
Alsop)
Grampian Orogeny in Scotland (Dr Grahame Oliver)
High-T and low-T granites in Scottish Caledonian (Dr Ed Stephens)
Microcontinents in the Western Indian Ocean (Dr Ed Stephens)
Modelling sediment flux variations in a piggyback basin (Dr Ruth Robinson)
Neoproterozoic tectonic evolution of the North Atlantic region (Dr Tony Pra=
ve)
Neoproterozoic tectonostratigraphic evolution of Namibia (Dr Tony Prave)
Oceanic versus island arcs in the Lesser Himalaya, Kathmandu, Nepal (Dr
Grahame Oliver)
Pillow lavas and the existence of an early caldera in the Isle of Mull
lava pile (Dr Colin Donaldson)
Relationship between geophysical and geotechnical properties of surficial
Quaternary marine sediments ( Professor John McManus)
Sediment storage in intermontane basins of NW Argentina (Dr Ruth Robinson)
Structural relations and petrology of the Ben Buie layered intrusion, Mull
(Dr Colin Donaldson)
Tectonic evolution of a reactivated crustal-scale fault system (Dr Ian Also=
p)
Two banded dykes in NW Skye (Dr Colin Donaldson)

We would expect the successful candidate to have a first or upper
second class honours degree in geoscience or another
relevant subject, or a Masters degree. You will be in competition with
Physical Geographers and Human Geographers.
The studentship will be allocated in early September, so if you are
interested please let us know immediately. The best way to do this is by
email to a staff member with relevant interests, copied to Richard
Batchelor ([log in to unmask]) and Robin Flowerdew
([log in to unmask]). Alternatively a telephone call to one of the
above people would be appropriate.
