****** SGTSG Kalbarri 2003 *******
22-26th September 2003
The Geological Society of Australia
Specialist Group in Structural Geology and Tectonics (SGTSG)
The next SGTSG biennial field meeting will be held at Kalbarri on the
spectacular west coast of Western Australia. This meeting will highlight
scientific advances and understanding in all areas of tectonics and
structural geology; from field-based studies to analogue and computer
modelling and microstructure to mountain building. The program will
provide a framework for international scientists to discuss their research
through focused thematic oral and poster sessions, pre- and post-
conference fieldtrips to the Pinjarra and Capricorn Orogens and organized
social events.
Kalbarri is a holiday resort situated half way up the west coast of
Australia. It is surrounded by ocean, river, spectacular gorges and
National Parks and forms as a scenic highlight of Western Australia.
The conference will be consist of 4 days of talks and posters with mid-
conference field trips scheduled for the Wednesday.
Preliminary list of Thematic Sessions
1. Tectonics through Time: The IGCP 453 Symposium
2. Rates & Dates: Advances & Applications of Structural Geochronology
3. Maths to Mothballs: Applications of Modelling to Structure and Tectonics
4. Microstructures on the Edge
5. Australia: Basement to Basins
6. Faults and Fluids
Field Trips
In keeping with the aims of the SGTSG, fieldtrips are a fundamental part
of the conference. Being located on the central west coast of WA, Kalbarri
is well placed for exploring the Pinjarra and Capricorn Orogens. These
represent Neoproterozoic accretion on Australia's western margin and the
Palaeoproterozoic collision between the Yilgarn and Pilbara cratons. These
complex orogens provide excellent opportunities to study accretionary,
collisional and transpressional tectonics. The pre- and post conference
field trips will investigate the controversial tectonic evolution of these
orogens. Mid-conference field excursions will visit outcrops close to the
conference venue. These will include Mesoproterozoic granulite facies
rocks of the Northampton Complex and Phanerozoic red beds. The latter are
well exposed in spectacular river gorges and coastal outcrops and
demonstrate facies relationships and soft sediment deformation within a NW
shelf reservoir analogue.
Field trips will be linked to IGCP project 453 - Modern and Ancient Orogens
