medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

In a slightly different vein, an interesting case study here would be
the scholarship on Margery Kempe, whose Book (the first autobiography
in English) was rediscovered in the 1930's. Early readers critics
viewed her as a classic "hysteric" or tagged her with a number of
psychiatric labels, but in the last 15 or so years the scholarship on
Kempe has become, to my mind, much more provocative, nuanced, and
sophisticated.
