medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. August) is the feast day of:
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Tarsicius (3rd-4th cent.) Tarsicius (maybe an acolyte, maybe a deacon) was
carrying consecrated eucharistic bread (according to later legend, on his
way to confessors in prison) when a mob started baiting him, asking what he
was carrying. He refused to give it up, and was stoned to death. It is
only in modern times that Tarsicius has been represented as a young boy,
which has led to his cult as patron of altar boys.
Napoleon of Alexandria (d. c. 300) Napoleon (Neapolus) was a citizen of
Alexandria. Arrested in Diocletian's persecution, he was tortured so
severely that he died while being carried back to his prison cell.
Arnulf of Soissons (d. 1087) Arnulf was a successful warrior, but then
became a monk at St. Medard (Soissons). He lived as a hermit for a time
before becoming abbot. In 1081 Arnulf became bishop, but was driven out by
a rival. He then founded a monastery at Aldenburg in Flanders, where he
died.
Limbania of Genoa (blessed) (d. 1294) Limbania was a Benedictine nun of
Genoa. She became a hermit in a cave below the church of St. Thomas.
