We have 5 SHOs and have just been ratified as a 2A band by the local JDC
monitoring group. We also have 5 middle graders (1 SG, 1 SpR and 3 SHO IIIs)
who are on a separate rota which has also been ratified as a band 2A.
We had most problems not with the total hours but with the breaks (30 mins
for every 4 hours worked) so we had to do some changing round and be very
strict about them taking their breaks to the point where they are also now
timetabled!
So it can be done but I agree you need 6 on a rota to do it. Our compromise
ia that we have to have locum cover when there is a middle grader and an SHO
off at the same time and the SHO holidays are allocated at the start of the
job.
Also, I always thought that if the SHOs are doing locums other than in their
annual leave they were in breach of their contract.
I will get a copy of our rota pattern and post it on the list for info.
