Dear Sarah,
Most keepers of manuscripts are very protective of their holdings,
and quite rightly. But there are *some* opportunities for seeing
them. Probably the best display of medieval manuscripts in the world
is that in the British Library, which has an exhibition room in which
one can see, for example, the Lindisfarne Gospels, the
Moutier-Grandval Bible, the Sherborne Missel, the Luttrell Psalter,
etc., etc. Not to be missed. In Paris, opportunities are perhaps
not so great, but the Cluny Museum (now the Musee national du moyen
age) has a manuscript, a book of hours I believe, in a series of
brass-bound glass panels that can be turned like an actual book, so
that you can see the whole thing. In London, the manuscripts are
open to a pre-chosen page, and that's that. There is plenty of other
medieval material to see, as well, in the Cluny Museum, the Louvre,
the British Museum and the Victorial and Albert Museum.
Bon voyage!
