medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. July) is the feast day of:
Palladius (5th cent.) The mysterious Palladius appears in Prosper of
Aquitaine's chronicle under the year 431 as the first bishop in Ireland,
sent by Pope Celestine. Palladius seems to have worked mainly in Wicklow,
and not for very long; his visit was largely forgotten, except when it was
hopelessly conflated with the life of Patrick.
Prosper of Aquitaine (d. after 455) Prosper was a lay theologian of
distinction. He is first heard of in c. 428, living with the monks of
Marseilles. From c. 440 he was in Rome, where he was employed in the papal
chancery. The main subject of Prosper's work was to uphold Augustine's
teaching on grace.
Hedda of Winchester (d. 705) Hedda was educated at Whitby and in 676
became the first bishop of the West Saxons to have his see at Winchester
instead of Dorchester. He was apparently held in high esteem by
contemporaries (Bede says he was prudent and had innate wisdom), and cures
were reported at this tomb (especially by taking dust from the tomb and
drinking it in water.
Willibald (d. 786) Willibald was born in Wessex in c. 700. As a young man
he traveled to the near east (he was the first known English pilgrim to the
Holy Land), and then lived for a decade as a monk at Monte Cassino. Pope
Gregory III sent W. to Germany to help his kinsman Boniface who ordained W
and in 742 made him first bishop of Eichstatt.
Maelruain (d. 792) Maelruain founded the monastery of Tallaght (Co.
Wicklow, Ireland). From that base, he became the most influential leader
of the Celi De reform movement.
