Tinho,
The OS wall map of UK administrative boundaries has an inset map titled
"Ancient or geographical counties". Although presumably aimed at school
children this might be an appropriate starting point for your reader.
Surprisingly the map shows many of the post 'Maud' Commission counties. I do
realise children consider anything over 30-years old as ancient, but I doubt
many teachers would agree.
