The Institute for Geology at the University of Vienna, Austria, has funding
opportunities for a graduate student research project (Ph.D.). The project
is part of the collaborative project “FlaSh”, developed between the
University of Vienna (B. Grasemann), ETH Zurich (N.S. Mancktelow) and the
University of Mainz (C.W. Passchier). The project focuses on analogue and
numerical modelling of flow disturbances around discontinuities in order to
gain a better understanding of important shear-sense criteria, such as shear
bands or monoclinic boudinage (see Passchier 2001 J. Struct. Geol. v.23/6-7
p. 951-962; Grasemann et al. 2001 J. Struct. Geol. v.23/4 p. 715-724; and
references therein).
The applicant should have an undergraduate record in any geo-, natural- or
technical science. A basic knowledge of numerical methods (e.g. finite
element technique) and continuum mechanics is expected. Experience in
structural geology, tectonics and the operating system Linux is considered
an additional qualification, but is not obligatory.
The applicant is expected to design finite element models and to compare the
results with both analogue models and analytical and numerical results
carried out by other members of FlaSh in Vienna, Zurich and Mainz. The
applicant will be involved in joint field campaigns in Greece, the Alps and
Namibia and should closely cooperate with a second PhD student in Vienna,
who will focus on the visualization of the 3D geometries of natural
examples.
The holder of the PhD position shall primarily devote his/her time to their
own research studies. They may perform other duties within the position,
which may be educational, scientific or administrative, to a limited extent
(max 20%). The PhD position is a full time employment for 3 years. Local
guidelines of the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) determine the salary
levels (about 15.500 €/year).
The majority of PhD students within our structural and tectonics working
group at the Institute for Geology in Vienna are male (15/2). Women are
therefore especially invited to apply for the position. English is spoken by
everybody in the institute and will be the language of the final thesis; a
knowledge of German is, therefore, not required for the position.
The deadline for applications is end of August, 2002. The position is open
from the 1st of October, although students who will be able to take up the
position no later than the end of the year 2002 may also apply. Applicant
should send a short CV including a reference list as attached Email to
