medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I seem to recall that somewhere I read that St Christopher was a reformed
werewolf .....
This may be a post-Hammer gloss on the dog-head icon, of course.
I also found this note in my files but alas, no source.
"ST CHRISTOPHER
In almost every parish church, either as a statue or a wall-painting
opposite the SOUTH DOOR so that it was the first thing that you saw when you
came in, was St Christopher.
CHRISTOFORI FACIEM DIE QUACUNQUE TUERIS
ILLA NEMPE DIE MORTE MALA NON MORIERIS.
IF ON ANY MORNING YOU SEE THE FACE OF ST CHRISTOPHER, YOU WILL NOT DIE
UNSHRIVEN THAT DAY."
And also the one thing you saw if you passed the open door without going in
...
No wonder St Chris. was popular with travellers for whom the roads and
sea-ways were a real hazard....
