Hi Jenny,
Many thanks for your reply with information concerning the
wells in France. The area sounds most interesting. It is
particularly interesting to hear that the well cult is
thriving down there with pilgrimages, and are well tended.
In the former respect it sounds more like the Eire than
Cornwall but the Irish wells i visited were largely not
that well looked after.
Crikey, possibly more wells than Cornwall. How can you get
any work done with all those wells to visit? :-)
The pilgrimages in Eire are very Catholic oriented. The
wells that are most heavily visited tend to have plenty of
Catholic artefacts left there and a statue of the patron
saint, rather like those down your way. But the wells in
your part of the world appear to have a more mixed
following which is very interesting in itself.
I find it interesting that you have not identified any
wells (with the possible exception of 'La Fontaine a
Devotion de la Fontenille'. I wonder why that particular
custom has not appeared in your area. But on the other hand
i guess that it is not that common in th UK and Eire
either. There are few wells that can claim a long history
of rag tying, and i don't recall that much in Eire either.
Thank you for the links to the photos and a list of your
favourites, i do hope that i can make a visit that way
myself some day.
Best wishes,
Rich
