medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To the Old Norse eddic material already cited can be added an episode
in the saga of St. Olaf, in which the king is asked by one of his retainers,
as he rides by the burial mound of Olaf Geirstadaalf, whether he had been
buried there. St O is outraged and replies "my spirit never had two bodies".
the background to all of this is an appearance of Olaf Geirstadaalf
in a dream at the beginning of the saga in which he gives advice that
enables St Olafs mother to give birth.
This has all been discussed by Anne Holstmark, "Her varum ok hedan forum"
in Afmaelisrit Jons Helgasonar, ed. Jakob Benediktsson, Reykjavik, 1969
pp. 92-97.
