medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Apollonia is the best one I know of. A deaconess of Alexandria, she had her
teeth smashed with a club in a mid-third century uprising and was
threatened with burning if she would not recant. Instead, she jumped into
the fire. This gave her hagiographers a few problems - there was some
debate about the legitimacy of what she did. I think we had some discussion
about her on this list a while back.
