medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Listmembers
Among the commemoration of saints in books of hours is a rare
late 15th c. text, with the incipit: Dyonisius radius grecie
grouping St.Denis with George, Christopher, Blasius and Egidius.
Leroquais did quote the first two lines from BN ms.lat.1401
(Livres d'heures manuscrits, I,p.237) without a comment.
A handwritten copy is before me, extracted from another source,
olim in Chateau de Livry, and the question is now if the full text
has been published with an authorative comment?
As far as I can decipher the scribbles (from the auction in 1939)
is the text:
Dyonisius radius grecie
Fide regnum illustrans francie
O georgi miles egregie
Hostem vincens armis potencie
Xpofore tinctus in sanguine
Christum ferens humeris flumine
Blasi presul vivens purissime
Plagas curans carnis et anime
O egidi cum feris habitans
Regis crimine Karoli recitans (!)
Impetrate que nunc sancti flagitans
Apud deum ne sim periclitans.
Any reference and/or comments are appreciated -
(and a translation into a modern vulgar tongue!)
Erik Drigsdahl
