medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've been reading Matthew Paris' Chronicles (the nice illustrated
paperback of about 3 years), and realized that I don't understand how
churches, etc., were valued. He's continually saying that such and such
a place was "worth" 100 pounds, or 200 marks, or something. Is the
valuation due to, say, the agricultural produce of the place?
Parishoners' tithes? What's the nature of the income and how could it
be stably estimated?
