medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Dialogues of the Carmelites is based on a genuine historical incident
though it changes one or two details for historical effect. The nuns of
Compiegne were anxious to frame their experience as a martyrdom and a
sacrifice to God for the end of the Terror and did all they could to shape
their execution to that end. Their are discrepancies in Poulenc's version
and certainly massive "novelization" in the dialogues themselves but the
main thread is accurate. Ironically, despite recurrent efforts (including
under the present pope) these martyrs have yet to be canonized.
