Dear Giovanna Signore
I am not a fascist sociologist, or a racist sociologist, but I am not
pleased that a professional and scientific list of European sociology
is getting involved into a set of political appeals concerning specific
countries, where no adequate information is given about the documentation
to be signed. I would like to recall the recent appeal to boycott
Israels academic institutions.
The Bossi Fini immigration act does not seem to be more restrictive
than immigration acts limiting quotas which have been passed in the
United States. In fact, the US have been using more restrictive policies
upon migration than Italy has today.
The fact that this appeal is not sponsored by sociologists, but by the
Italian
political party "democratici di sinistra" discloses a political motivation
which is extraneous to the purposes of the present mailing list.
I would rather consider with favour an appeal to study the effectiveness
and failures of migration policies in Europe according to a shared
"common system" of European values. Within this framework
the Bossi-Fini act can be considered as being more or less
restrictive. It is a fact, however, that very few European sociologist
are thinking of collaborating together in comparative social research
and a very limited number of proposals is directed to the European
Commission on this subject by sociologists and social workers.
With best regards
Francesco Battisti
