Anti-racist appeal
We the undersigned, are opposed to the Italian government’s proposed
new anti-immigration law, Bossi-Fini, which will be put to vote before
the Italian Camera next week. This law contains many discriminatory
proposals. One point in particular proposes taking the fingerprints of
all immigrants who ask for an Italian visa.
This proposal will destroy the fundamental human right to equality of
treatment before the law, treating immigrants as potential criminals.
The government would not find it possible to extend such a presumption
of criminality to all Italian citizens, and nor is it likely that they
would try to do so to citizens from countries such as the United
States, Japan and Switzerland. In this case, the law could
institutionalise racism within the immigratory authorities, because
only those from certain countries would have their fingerprints
demanded.
We ask the parliament to stop this law; the problem of immigration is
an issue concerning all European countries, but it is not right to
attempt to deal with it through such an emotional and discriminatory
measure.
Signed:
1. Giovanna Signore
