medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. May) is the feast day of:
Desiderius of Langres (d. 407 or 411) Desiderius became bishop of Langres
(France) in 346. He was probably killed in a Vandal attack. His relics
were raised in 1314.
Desiderius of Vienne (d. 611) This Desiderius became archbishop of Vienne
(France) in 596. He criticized Queen Burnhilde, who arranged to have the
annoying archbishop murdered.
Guibert (Wibert) (d. 962) Guibert of Darnau founded the famous Benedictine
monastery of Gembloux on his family lands. He himself entered the
monastery of Gorze. Guibert was canonized in 1100.
Girolamo Savonarola (d. 1498) Not formally canonized, but a beatification
process was begun in 1997. Savonarola was born in Ferrara in 1452. He
entere the Dominican order and in 1491 became prior of S. Marco in
Florence. He was a deeply provocative and moving penitential preacher with
strong prophetic overtones, especially annoying the Medici (who were driven
out of Florence) and Pope Alexander VI. Savonarola tried to create godly
state in Florence, but in 1497 was excommunicated, and in April 1498
imprisoned and tortured. He was condemned as a "heretic and schismatic"
and hanged and his body burned in Florence on this day.
