"THE PORTOLAN": JOURNAL OF THE WASHINGTON MAP SOCIETY
ISSUE 53 (Spring 2002)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Issue 53 (Spring 2002), consisting of 76 pages, including numerous
profusely illustrated articles, was published in May 2002 and has been sent
to all subscribers and members in good standing of the Washington Map
Society. TINE NINGAL's article on the movement from mental mapping to
computer mapping in Papua New Guinea was the winner of an honorable mention
in the Ristow Prize competition of 2001. This Portolan also features the
research of Bill Warren, who clearly dissects the story behind the
"Diderot" maps. Professor Doctor Alexey Postnikov's article on 17th
Century traditional Russian cartography and the importance of Remezov and
his drawing books of Siberia will appear in his future book on the
subject but a clear explanation is presented in this issue for interested
researchers. John Docktor introduces us to the maps and diagrams of
sixteenth century English mapmaker Humphrey Cole. The innovative program
that the Texas General Land Office is using to preserve its old maps is
presented by Bert Johnson; it can be a model for other states and
institutions eager to save their collections for the future. Experiences
from a first-time attendee at the Miami International Map Fair are
described by David Hubbard, who attended last February's event. Bert
Johnson, who attended the April meeting of the Texas Map Society, describes
the many activities that occurred. And there is more. "The Portolan" is
published three times per year; issue 54 is expected to be released in
September 2002.
