Dear fellow field teachers,
Rather than have (the impossible task) of creating check lists which cover
all possibilities at all outcrops, I have found that acronym's of
particular universal skills eg. field sketches, sketch sections help
students NOT to forget the basics.
I use several of these (Iv,e given just a couple of examples below) and
they do seem to help with the fundamentals. Students also enjoy making
their own up!
General points which all field sketches should include follow "OASIS"
O - Orientation of sketch (plan or section, N point etc)
A - Annotation of sketch (label main features)
S - Scale of sketch
I - Information from sketch (whats important)
S - Sight - draw what is actually seen!
General points which all sketch sections should include follow ALSOP (I
know it's terrible of me but my students certainly remember it !)
A - Annotation of topography and geology
L - Line of section clearly labelled at each end (and on any map)
S - Scale, both horizontal and vertical (with units)
O - Orientation of section labelled at each end
P - Projections above and below surface level
