medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. May) is the feast day of:
Germanus of Paris (d. 576) Germanus was born in c. 496 in Autun (France).
He became a hermit, then a priest, then from 540 abbot of St-Symphorien in
Autun. In 550 Germanus was named archchaplain of King Childebert I and
bishop of Paris. He was highly honored for his advice and his humility.
His cult was especially strong in the Carolingian era.
William of Aquitaine (of Gellone) (d. 812) William was a Carolingian, a
grandson of Charles Martel born in c. 750. He became an officer of
Charlemagne, but withdrew from secular life. William founded the monastery
of Gellone (France), settled it with Benedictine monks, and in 806 joined
himself as a laybrother, working as a cook in the kitchens. William was
canonized in 1066.
Victor of Tomils (d. c. 887) The priest Victor of Tomils (Switzerland) was
murdered by a nobleman who resented being reproached for his lifestyle. He
is accounted a martyr.
Lanfranc of Canterbury (d. 1089) Lanfranc was born in c. 1005 in Pavia
(Italy) and went on to become a celebrated teacher in Italy and Burgundy.
In c. 1040 he opened a school in Avranches (Normandy), and in 1043 entered
the monastery of Le Bec. Lanfranc became prior in 1045, and soon founded a
famed moanstic school there, training several of the great minds of the
age. In 1063 Lanfranc became abbot in Caen, and in 1070 William the
Conqueror made him archbishop of Canterbury. His relics are now kept in
the Jesuit college in Venice.
