medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. May) is the feast day of:
Evodius of Antioch (d. c. 67) According to tradition, Evodius was first
bishop of Antioch, succeeding Peter (who isn't counted as bishop there (?)
Evodius is reckoned among the 72 Disciples, and is supposed to have been
martyred.
Petronax (d. 750) The second founder of Montecassino, Petronax (from
Brescia) was asked by Pope Gregory II to restore monastic life at the
Benedictine mother house (which had been destroyed by Lombards in 577). He
found a couple of monks there, who elected him abbot, and he gradually
restored the monastery.
Remigius (d. 1092) Remigius was a monk of Fecamp, who came to England with
William the Conqueror. In 1067 he was elected bishop of Rochester, but in
1072 transferred to Lincoln. Already highly honored during his lifetime, a
cult of Remigius developed after his death that flourished for several
centuries.
Elisabeth of Hungary (d. 1338) Not formally canonized. Elisabeth was the
daughter of King Andrew III of Hungary, born in 1293. Her parents wished
to to marry Wenceslas of Bohemia, but Elisabeth refused and fled, entering
a Dominican convent near Zurich (Switzerland) in c. 1310. With Elisabeth,
the dynasty of Stephen of Hungary came to an end.
Prudentia (blesssed) (d. 1492) Prudentia Castori, born in Milan, was
abbess of the Augustinian convent of S. Marco in Como from c. 1463 until
her death. It is probable that she herself founded the convent. There
were many miracles at Prudentia's tomb, and a strong cult developed.
