medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. May) is the feast day of:
Plautilla (1st century) According to legend, Plautilla was a Roman widow,
baptized by Peter and present at the martyrdom of Paul, whose disciple she
was. Plautilla gave Paul her veil before his execution, so he could cover
his eyes. The legend reports that Paul returned the veil, blood-specked,
in a later apparition.
Ethelbert (d. 794?) A not completely certain tradition reports that
Ethelbert was king of East Anglia in the late eighth century. He probably
married Etheldritha, the daughter of King Offa of Mercia. But at the
behest of Offa's wife, Ethelbert was murdered. From the beginning he was
honored as a martyr.
Bernardino of Siena (d. 1444) Bernardino was one of the greatest popular
preachers of Italy, and was already regarded as a saint during his
lifetime. He was born in Massa-Maritima in 1380, started his studies at
the university at the age of 11, and in 1402 entered the Franciscan order.
His life combined self-abnegation and deeply influential penitential
preaching. Bernardino was canonized in 1450, and since 1860 there have
been efforts to have him proclaimed a doctor of the Church.
