medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Listmembers,
I have recently come upon references that the Fourth Lateran Council
forbade the display of relics outside of their reliquaries. Does
anybody know why? And this injunction appears to have been rather
widely ignored, or superceded, later in the Middle Ages, when
ostension of relics seems to have been relatively common. Can
anyone shed any light on this practice, or change in practice?
Many thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
