The economics seems pretty clear cut for free movement of labour - more a
political question. A more interesting question might be why do the
anti-globalization folk seem to be for free movement of labour but not for
goods and services.
I like to remind myself of two things any time I become agitated on this
subject.
1. Joseph Conrad (in my opinion and in others) the greatest English novelist
was Polish and English was his third language. Conrad came to England before
the Great War and did not need so much as a passport to enter and stay.
2. Irving Fischer was a leading light in the Eugenics movement in the USA -
a result of which was the barring of Eastern Europeans from entering the USA
for a long period.
I also note increased traffic on this discussion group...hmmm study leave
for the sixth form started?
