[A brief and somewhat select biography of Venantius Fortunatus]
I somehow very much miss a mention that for a long time, Venantius made his
living applying his art in panegyrics to Frankish kings and nobles (but,
unlike Sidonius Apollinaris, he does not seem to have entertained barbarian
friends who came to eat his food). To me, he will always be the gifted
scald who would sing in praise of even the worst of scoundrels in exchange
for a free meal, and who wound up as bishop because he knew which boots to
lick.
