medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. April) is the feast day of:
Ruadan (Rodanus) (d. 584) Ruadan is one of the most picturesque Irish
saints, famed for his skill in cursing. He is accounted among the 12
Apostles of Ireland, a disciple of Finian of Clonard. Little is known of
Ruadan's life, besides his foundation of the monastery of Lorrha (Lothra)
in Co. Tipperary. The central event of his later legend is a quarrel
between the saint and Diarmait mac Cerbaill, the last pre-Christian king to
celebrate the feast of Tara. According to the tale, Diarmait insulted
Ruadan, and in response the saint cursed Tara, leading the site to be
abandoned. (In reality, Tara was occupied until the mid-seventh century)
Hunna (d. c. 687) Hunna lived in the seventh century in Alsace, and was
married to a noble. She and her husband agreed to give all their goods to
churches and monasteries, after which she cared for the poor and sick and
did their laundry (she has the nickname "the holy laundress"). Her grave
in Hunaweier was a popular pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Her relics
were elevated in 1529.
Waltmann (d. 1138) (blessed) Waltmann was a disciple of Norbert of Xanten,
the founder of the Praemonstratensian order. In 1124 Waltmann became first
abbot of the Praemonstratensian monastery of Antwerp. He was known for his
great learning and piety.
