medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Learned members, an art history colleague sent me this interesting question
which I cannot answer, but I said someone on this venerable list would.
So...
.I know that the 4 beasts of the Evangelist symbols come from the
visions of Ezekiel and of St. John in Revelations--but who assigned them
to each evangelist (who determined that Mark was the lion, etc.?) Was
it one of the early church fathers? They show up in art by the 5th c.
(and maybe earlier, but I can't think of an example). All I can find is
that it's "by tradition."
