medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. April) is the feast day of:
Marianus and Jacobus (d. prob. 259) The relics of the martyrs Marianus and
Jacobus are honored in the cathedral of Gubbio (Italy) They were a lector
and a deacon, executed by decapitation in Numidia in the reign of Valerian.
Erkonwald (d. 693) The noble Englishman Erkonwald founded several
monasteries and in 675 became bishop of London. His shrine in St. Paul's
Cathedral was a popular and miracle-working pilgrimage site until the
Reformation.
Hildegard (d. 783) Hildegard, born in c. 758, was the second wife of
Charlemagne. She bore him nine children, including Louis the Pious.
HIldegard was famed for her support of churches and monasteries.
Amator of Cordoba (d. 855) Amator was a priest, active in Cordoba. He was
martyred by order of the Muslim authorities.
Forannan (d. 982) Forannan was an Irishman, by tradition a bishop, who in
c. 950 became probably the first abbot of the Benedictine monastery of
Waulsort near Liege (Belgium). He was a great supporter of the Gorzian
monastic reform.
Wolfhard (d. 1127) Wolfhard was born in Augsburg in c. 1070. He learned
the craft of saddle making, and took up a wandering existence. In 1095 he
reached Verona, where he remained to work at his trade. Evenings, Wolfhard
cared for the sufferers of the city, spending mosto f his income on them.
As he attracted more and more attention, Wolfhard fled to a hermitage,
where he lived for 20 years. In 1117, though, Wolfhard entered the
Calmoldelese monastery S. Salvatore in Verona, where he became a recluse.
