Ann:
Are you sure of the spellings/transcriptions? Van (rather than Vau) - in
present-day Turkey - is marked as a mission station on plate 14 'Western
Asia' in the 'Statistical atlas of Christian missions : containing a
directory of missionary societies, ..., an index of mission stations, and a
series of specially prepared maps [by "John Barthomolew & Co., Edinr."] of
mission fields' (Edinburgh : World Missionary Conference, 1910)'. The index
entry informs that Van has a station for the the ABCFM (i.e. American Board
of Commissioners for Foreign Missions) - and for DHL [!]. I think
"Hasskein" may be corrupted, but the answer must lie in 'Auld Reekie'
somewhere - didn't W. & A.K. Johnston also have both church and cartographic
connections?
Francis
