medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. March) is the feast day of:
Lucius I (d. 254) Immediately after his election as bishop of Rome in 253
Lucius I was banned by Emperor Trebonianus. He was able to return to Rome
after the ruler's death, but died eight months later himself, perhaps
martyred.
Petrus Pappacarbone (d. 1123) Peter was born in c. 1040 in Salerno, and
entered the monastery of La Cava in c. 1054. In 1062 he was sent to Cluny,
where he stayed for about seven years. After his return, Peter was named
bishop of Policastro, but soon abdicated and returned to La Cava, where he
was elected abbot. He introduced the Cluniac rule and created a large
circle of reform monasteries; by the time of Peter's death, the
Congregation of La Cava included 40 monasteries, 35 priories, and over 60
churches. He was canonized in 1893.
Kasimir of Poland (d. 1484) Kasimir is the patron of Poland and Lithuania.
He was born in 1458 in Cracow, the son of King Kasimir IV and Elisabeth.
At the age of 13, the nobles of Hungary elected Kasimir as their king, but
he was prevented from taking up the office. From 1479 to 1483 Kasimir
governed Poland for his father. He was noted for unusual piety, and swore
an oath of chastity. Efforts to canonize Kasimir began soon after his
death, and he was declared a saint in either 1521 or 1602.
