medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Well, you've picked a good one here!
The text from the Use of York is as follows:
O nata lux de lumine
Jesu redemptor seculi
dignare clemens supplicum
laudes precesque sumere.
Qui carne quondam contegi
dignatus es pro perditis
nos membra confer effici
tui beati corporis.
Pre sole vultu flameus
ut nix amictu candidus
in monte dignis testibus
apparuisti conditor.
Vates alumnis additos
tuis alumnis conferens
utrisque te divinitus
deum dedisti cedere.
Te vox paterna celitus
suum vocavit filium:
quem nos fideli pectore
regem fatemur glorie.
Concede nobis quesumus
almis micare moribus
ut ad polorum gaudia
bonis vehamur actibus.
Laudes tibi nos pangimus
eterne regem rex deus:
qui es trinus et unus deus
per cuncta regnans secula. Amen.
This is from the 1526 Gaschet edition of the Breviary,
the 1533 is almost exactly the same. The feast does
not appear in earlier York Breviaries (1507 being the
next earliest) aas it was added to the Use in 1513/14
in a Breviary supplement.
According to the Catholic Encyclopaedia the feast was
generally encouraged by Pope Calixtus III in the mid
1450s..presumably it took a while to get popular here,
although my earliest Sarum printed source (1502)lists
the feast....
On the topic of Tallis' setting, Paul Doe writes
('Tallis', OUP, 1976):
"The hymn 'O nata lux de lumine' does not belong to
this Marian set, but is almost certainly Elizabethan.
It does not use the plainsong (EH 234), nor is it set
alternatim: the polyphony comprises the first and
second verses, with a most unliturgical repeat of the
last two lines." (pg 36)
So there we are.....
Cheers
Rob
