medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hmm. That's interesting. Not only two of my saints' books but the
literature you can get at the church of S. Matthias in Trier itself all
claim exclusive status for their relics. Could it be an issue of "critical
mass" of relics? I'm semi-guessing that other relics of apostles made it
north; didn't Augustine of Canterbury already bring some relics of St.
Peter to England in 596---I've always assumed that this was little bits(?)
Are there other northern European churches with pieces of apostles? The
Trier references consistently say that they have the "tomb" of
Matthias---which at least to my mind suggests a majority of the body.
