Since the question is about social movements, which are generally associated
with a politics of resistance, I would add a further reservation about
Foucault's work to that made by Tim. Though Foucault is quite explicit that
power/resistance are the two sides of the same coin, he does not theorise
resistance to nearly the same extent that he does power, especially in his
early work - in fact, I'm not sure that he really develops a theory of
resistance at all. There are other authors who might be more helpful in that
respect. His concept of discourse is also one-sided and that is important
for how resistance works, or doesn't, in practice. For this reason, it's
important not to be too selective in your reading of Foucault and to try to
include some of the later works on ethics and the care of the self. I know
of two PhD theses that are very good in their use of Foucault in relation to
disability - Fran Branfield from Leeds (UK), and Russell Shuttleworth, who
completed his thesis at Berkeley (USA). Mark Sherry in Australia has also
done some very interesting work that develops ideas about resistance.
Hope this helps
